Integrated Calcium Signaling in Plants
نویسندگان
چکیده
Calcium ion (Ca 2+ ) is the most important universal signal carrier used by living organisms, including plants, to convey information to many different cellular processes. The cytosolic free Ca 2+ concentration ([Ca 2+ ] cyt ) has been found to increase in response to many physiological stimuli, including stress. The Ca 2+ spikes normally result from two opposing reactions, Ca 2+ influx through channels or Ca 2+ efflux through pumps. The removal of increased Ca 2+ from the cytosol to either the apoplast or intracellular organelles requires energized “active” transport. Ca 2+ -ATPases and Ca 2+ /H + antiporters are the key proteins catalyzing this movement. The increased level of Ca 2+ is recognized by some Ca 2+ sensors or calcium-binding proteins, which can activate many calcium-dependent protein kinases. The regulation of gene expression by cellular Ca 2+ is also crucial for plant defense against various stresses. In this chapter several aspects of calcium signaling, such as Ca 2+ requirement, Ca 2+ transporters/pumps (Ca 2+ -ATPases, Ca 2+ /H + antiporter), Ca 2+ signature, Ca 2+ memory, and various Ca 2+ -binding proteins, are presented.

متن کاملExpressional Analysis and Role of Calcium Regulated Kinases in Abiotic Stress Signaling
Perception of stimuli and activation of a signaling cascade is an intrinsic characteristic feature of all living organisms. Till date, several signaling pathways have been elucidated that are involved in multiple facets of growth and development of an organism. Exposure to unfavorable stimuli or stress condition activates different signaling cascades in both plants and animal. Being sessile, pl...
متن کاملCalcium Signaling Networks Channel Plant K+ Uptake
Potassium channel function is fundamental to many physiological processes in plants. In this issue of Cell, identify a protein complex in Arabidopsis consisting of a potassium channel, a protein kinase, and a calcium sensor. This study reveals that plants cope with limited soil potassium by coupling potassium channel activation to a cellular calcium signaling network.
متن کاملUpdate on Calcium Signaling Calcium Signaling through Protein Kinases. The Arabidopsis Calcium-Dependent Protein Kinase Gene Family
In plants, numerous Ca -stimulated protein kinase activities occur through calcium-dependent protein kinases (CDPKs). These novel calcium sensors are likely to be crucial mediators of responses to diverse endogenous and environmental cues. However, the precise biological function(s) of most CDPKs remains elusive. The Arabidopsis genome is predicted to encode 34 different CDPKs. In this Update, ...
متن کاملReal-time In Vivo Recording of Arabidopsis Calcium Signals During Insect Feeding Using a Fluorescent Biosensor
Calcium ions are predicted to be key signaling entities during biotic interactions, with calcium signaling forming an established part of the plant defense response to microbial elicitors and to wounding caused by chewing insects, eliciting systemic calcium signals in plants. However, the role of calcium in vivo during biotic stress is still unclear. This protocol describes the use of a genetic...
